General Information Edit

An Orbital Defense Platform is a class of large UNSC space stations, used to defend strategic locations of great importance, typically planets of high strategic value. They are very costly to build early game.

The stations are frequently placed in geosynchronous orbit and deployed in groups, or clusters, of two to five platforms. The well-equipped and large bridge of an ODP is suitable for directing large-scale engagements. Such was the case when Fleet Admiral Terrence Hood directed UNSC forces from an ODP during the Battle of Earth. The platform's main weapon is extremely powerful and long-ranged even by the Covenant's standards, and can shoot holes through ships as large as Supercarriers.

The Mk. V "Super" Magnetic Accelerator Cannon is the station's primary armament. By activating several sets of super conductive coils in a series which envelope the barrel, the Mk. V can launch a 3,000-ton tungsten/depleted uranium projectile at over 60,000km per second. As noted by Sergeant Major Avery Johnson, the Mk. V can punch a hole clean through a shielded Covenant Capital Ship.

Only the Didact's personal ship has been shown to survive the impact of these rounds. Against Covenant shield technology, the rounds possess enough kinetic energy to punch through shields, cut through the ship, and, upon exit, still retain enough energy to destroy a second ship, and cripple a third ship.

In the beginning of the game, it is best to avoid using these structures as they cost a lot and there are no real threats presented at the beginning of the game. But further into the game, it is smarter to build defensive lines around the front-line of any offensive engagements to ensure that UNSC controlled planets are not left unprotected when the fleet goes on the offensive. Make sure that these structures have Fighter Support or a small fleet with AAA Units otherwise enemy bombers will make short work of these 'Super' Magnetic Accelerator Cannons.

Once a defensive line of ODP's is built, Covenant Fleets that attempt a blind assault upon UNSC controlled planets will more than likely be cut in half before these structures are destroyed. These structures can also buy time to direct the main fleet towards the gravity well in question, especially if they are protected from bombers by AA-capable ships like the Stalwart.
